Hydraulic cylinders are used to convert energy from a hydraulic system into motion. Hydraulic cylinders can be produced in different sizes and can be used in a big variety of applications. This article describe more facts about the different types of cylinders, what they are used for and how they are constructed.

What are Hydraulic Cylinders used for?

Hydraulic cylinders can be used in heavy equipments or vehicles using hydraulic systems to perform work. Examples of such heavy equipment or vehicles can be elevators, excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, etc. As hydraulic cylinders come in many different sizes they can used for putting both light and heavy things into motion.

Types of Hydraulic Cylinders

There is a  variety of hydraulic cylinders, and all of them consist of a cylinder barrel (often with a cylinder bottom and a cylinder head), a piston and a piston rod. When the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the bottom of the cylinder, the piston rod starts moving outwards. When the hydraulic fluid is pumped of the cylinder, the piston rod moves back in.
There are two main types of hydraulic cylinders, tie rod cylinders and welded body cylinders.
  1. Tie rod cylinders have a cylinder barrel with a cylinder bottom and a cylinder head that are hold in place by high strength rods. This type of cylinder is due to this easy to disassemble and carry out service of.
  2. Welded body cylinders have a cylinder barrel and a cylinder bottom which are welded together and that does not need any high strength rods to keep them in place. This design makes it possible to have a more a narrow cylinder barrel which makes it possible to fit them in more demanding applications.
There are also a number of special hydraulic cylinders, such as plunger cylinders, differential cylinders and telescopic cylinders. Telescopic cylinders also have a variety of different types, such as single acting, double acting, single/double acting combination and  constant thrust/constant speed.

Suppliers of hydraulic cylinders

There are several suppliers of hydraulic accumulators. There are big hydraulic system suppliers who supply hydraulic cylinders, but there are also a lot suppliers who are specialized in producing hydraulic cylinders only.
